OUR HISTORY

The Stop Six congregation of the Church of Christ was established by the late Paul D. English and has been served by the following ministers:  J.T. Barnes, Burl Trotter, Sutton Johnson, J.S. Winston, S.T.W. Gibbs, Sr., and F.A. Livingston.

Dr. S.T.W. Gibbs, Jr. became the minister at Stop Six on November 7, 1954.  At this time the membership was very small but the desire to progress and move forward was present.  In 1958, a home was purchased on Lucas Drive and just a year later, the building on Amanda Street was remodeled.  In 1962, another building was built at the same location and the old parsonage was removed so that the lot could be used for parking.

Being a  progressive congregation and seeing the need for more space, the minister and leaders began negotiating in February, 1967 for property at 4500 East Berry Street.  In October of 1967, we secured the property on Berry Street and marched from the old building on Amanda Street to our present location.  Only six years later--in December, 1973-- we were able to "BURN THE NOTE" on the property at 4500 East Berry.

During the years that the Stop Six Church was building, remodeling, and purchasing property, the membership was also experiencing many, many problems.  As in the history of most, Stop Six had its trials.  Many thought that during the trying times, the congregation would surely succumb to the opposition; but rather than becoming weaker, the Stop Six Church became stronger.

Brother William Brown, Tom Johnson, Houston Holliway, Aaron Robinson, Major Elgin, Oscar E. Ferrell, Sr., Roosevelt Davis, Joe D. Connor, and L.L. Hamlett, who are now deceased, were leaders in the Stop Six congregation and bore witness to some of the "dark days" that we had.  Many other faithful Christians who are now deceased were a source of encouragement to the ministers and leaders during our difficult times.

Dr. S.T.W. Gibbs, Jr. has always encouraged the congregation  to be concerned with  mission work, locally, and abroad; and the impact of his personality has inspired many men throughout the brotherhood to preach the gospel.  Brothers Leroy Harvey, Vernon Meredith, Cleotha Miller, Benjamin F. Gibbs, John Key, L.L. Hamlett, Shelton T.W. Gibbs III, Joe Darrell Gibbs, William McCullough, Jr., and John L. Norris began preaching at the Stop Six congregation during that era

FORTY EIGHT YEARS AGO when S.T.W. Gibbs, Jr. began working with our congregation, the membership was small but with sound teaching, capable leadership, and the HELP OF GOD, it did not take long for the enrollment to double.  The strong nucleus around which the Worth Hill congregation, Mitchell Blvd . (formerly known as Vickery Blvd.), Mansfield and Mosier Valley congregations were built, at one time worshipped here but have since moved away: However, they are still in the "main stream" of their respective congregations and are making notable contributions just as they did at Stop Six.

In 1977 Dr. Gibbs, at a time of peace, with the support of  men who worked with him during that period (brothers John Norris, Napoleon Sibley, Allen Sibley, George Jackson, Sr., Sherman Wright, Onlis Willis, Frank Walker, Johnny Byrd, Morris Luster, William Watson, Dinzel Walker, Sr., Clifford Blackwell, Jr., Roy Whatley, Sr., Kelvin Morgan, Thelma Bonner, Abron Jernigan, Sr., Clifford Blackwell, Sr., Nathadis Portley, David E. Blakely, Troy Runnels) and, of course, with the blessing of the overall membership, initiated another building plan which resulted in the vaulting of the ceiling of the present sanctuary and a refurbishing of the entire building.  That was an effort that still, to a great degree, influences the inner attitude of the Stop Six edifice;  However, the broader range of Bro. Gibbs' leadership included a heart of remarkable  generosity which resulted in the bold and sacrificial suggestion to assist Bro. Cleotha Miller and the Arbala Road Church of Christ in Sulpher Springs Texas with their indebtedness.  Having built a beautiful white-bricked structure with just a few members, Bro. Miller constantly informed his father in the gospel of their lack of sufficient support from other congregations to keep the building from being lost to foreclosure.  With that threat looming over the Arbala Road Church, Dr. Gibbs chaired a meeting at which a One Hundred and Twelve Thousand Dollar decision was made...that Stop Six would shoulder that financial burden for the sake of the future of the Arbabla Road Church; However, Bro.  Gibbs and the church yielded to a suggestion made by Sherman Wright, who was Treasurer at that time and who had the faith that, even though it would require  the "S" word again (Sacrifice), it would be less expensive to retire the note in one Sixty-Five Thousand Dollar cash payment, saving 47,000 dollars in interest.  That payment was made and the debt was retired.  In the wake of much criticism and years of doubt as to the return on the investment, The Arbala Road Church is still alive and stands in the shadow of tremendous potential. Bro Cleotha Miller retired under postive circumstances and this church will always stand as a testimony to the unselfishness of The Stop Six Church.

In June of 1983, at the request of Dr. Gibbs, the Stop Six Church accepted and hired Joe Darrell Gibbs, Sr., his youngest son, as his full-time Assistant.  This father/son ministry lasted for 20 years, and during that two-decade era, there were many rewards and challenges in that relationship.  As Bro. Gibbs' health began to take a downward turn, Joe Darrell's ministerial responsibilities gradually became paramount for the continued  progress of the Stop Six Church.  After a courageous battle with various illnesses, Dr. Gibbs, Jr. departed this life July 19, 2003 at 11:30 p.m. at which time he handed his son the baton, and he has begun his race as Minister of the great Stop Six family.  With a heart broken by the passing of his father, Joe Darrell continued to nurture seeds he had planted over a number of years and several buds sprang forth by the help of the God of Heaven.  November 8, 2003, Bro. Joe Gibbs, Sr. ordained ten deacons: namely, Frank E. Walker, Rory A. Thomas, Roy M. Whatley, Sr., Gary Davis, Victor J. Norris, Sr., Norman L. Norris, Tony Walker, Dinzel Walker, Jr., Abron Jernigan, Sr., and Kelvin R. Morgan.  In addition to these men, several other men have been developed as teachers and others as preachers, including Victor J. Norris, Sr.(Now Minister of The Richnond Ave. C. of C. in Fort Worth,Tx.), Gary Davis (Deceased ),  and his son Joe Darrell Gibbs, Jr. who served as his formal,  full time Intern for 2 years and is now plans to return to Stop Six from OK, City (Northeast C of C) shortly.  Over Sixty viable ministries have been assigned and a full time Executive Secretary, Helen Curtis, was formally installed in August 2004.  All this serves as the foundation for our Member Building Program which is in progress.  With the help of God this legendary church will tackle this task and others through the inspiration of our Jesus-given theme," Rise, Let Us Be Going",  Matt. 26:46.
