(Youth Conselor's son) - 2
The extrodinarily high numbers of baptisms during this period was a result of the power of God, the use of visual aides, long invitations, and the help of my son, Joe Darrell, Jr., who was baptized at the age of six. He traveled with me extensively all over the country, and because many young people identified with his young age coupled with his early conversion, hundreds and hundreds of people were persuaded to come to Christ. I experienced much criticism at times, even without being aware, by many because some felt that I used scare and situational pressure tactics. However, I used whatever it took, including: interviewing young people, reading periodicals pertaining to young people, using "Shock and Awe", and many, many hours of searching shopping centers for whatever I thought would attract and maintain a young person's attention used in illustration. Many of the props where difficult to find and many of them where expensive. I do not relish the fact that some, perhaps many, parents and preachers concluded that some of my methods were inappropriate, but, while I apologize for your discomfort of my use of the unexpected, I do not apologize for the results. Those young people who some said were "too young" are adults now, and I doubt if any one of the hundreds I saw go down into the waters of baptism was spiritually disabled permanently, if at all, because many of them have grown up and are promising workers in the kingdom of God, including my son, Joe Darrell Jr. , who is 25 years of age, married, and a powerful young preacher. He, as others have made his share of mistakes, and as of February 2010 , is on the road of deliverance and is set his focus on accepting the role of associate minister to me and also serve as minster as evangelism. Joe was young when he was baptized, as where many to whom I preached during this time period. If some were rebaptized at another point in time that's fine, but the fact remains...they were not harrmed beyond spiritual repair and they had the opportunity to make their "calling and election sure", which my son, Joe Darrell, Jr. did. If they had not been baptized the first time at an early age, at which time they confessed faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, what if they had passed away with that knowledge unbaptized ? Would you have a guilty conscience as result of having not permitted them to be baptized ? It's a strong possibility, but since they were baptized at an early age and baptized again to make it sure, do you really think my methods were as harmful as some perceived? In the final analysis, if I don't get a good night's sleep, it's not because I baptized someone at an early age because I know that if they had passed away after confessing their faith in Christ Jesus and being baptized, they would have been better off rather than worse. Finally, those of you who preach to young people must consider seriously the cost of being effective. I was by the help of God and you can be also, but you must set your mind to the mind of the young people. If you don't you will never have as much success as is possible. Finally, be prepared to experience extreme fatigue because it requires a lot of preparation , creativity and energy to preach to young people the way I did, : Therefore, PREACH! And be absolutely sure to manage your schedule , rather than allowing your schedule to manage you! If you do not take heed to this advice you will suffer burn-out and it will take at least three to five years to regain your love, passion and engery to preach according to your ability.
Respectfully,
Dr.Joe Darrell Gibbs, Sr.
